Walk on Water
There’s a song by Elevation Worship called “Walk on Water,” and this song says, “This is how you walk on water, just put on foot in front of the other.” That’s what faith is, honestly, continuing to walk even when you can’t see the way.
There’s a story in Matthew 14:22-33. Specifically in verses 27-31 talk about how Peter talked to Jesus out on the waves and said, “If it’s really you Lord, tell me to come to you, walking on water.” Peter was the only one who had ever walked on water, and he even walked with Jesus!! I don’t know about you, but that’s one story to tell! In verse 30, it says, “But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord,” he shouted. Verse 31 continues and says, “Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?”
I believe we all have those moments where we walk under challenging circumstances. For a moment, we trust that God’s going to carry us but then end up relying on our strength or take our eyes off of him like Peter. There’s a movie called “Onward,” and there’s a scene where the main character (Ian) has to cross a bridge. He is completely terrified, and if he falls, there’s no coming back. He tells his brother, Barley, to harness him with a rope and then look out for him if he falls. In the end, Barley stops paying attention to Ian. And Ian was shocked and mad because 1. He made it across the bridge without falling because he kept his eyes towards the end and kept reassuring himself he would make it, and 2. Well, Barley wasn’t even holding the rope and paying attention, so Ian did it by himself.
We have to trust that we are going to be victorious in our circumstances. We have to believe in our hearts that the next page in our lives will be according to what God wants. He knows what lies ahead may be uncertain. There may be a job opportunity that opened up for you, but you’re unsure if it’s right for you. You may be waiting for some news, but not sure if it’ll be what you’re expecting. You may be facing a situation that you can’t do on your own, but realize that opening up maybe what’s best. It’s hard to have faith sometimes. No one blames you for that. God doesn’t get upset, but just like he told Peter, “Why did you doubt me?” He’s asking us the same thing.
He calls us to trust in him, and if that means “putting one foot in the front of the other” to walk, then that’s what we have to do. Regardless of the outcome, God promises to have our backs and be alongside us the entire way. Come out to him and take his hand, walk on water with one foot in front of the other and see what glorious path God takes you in.
