Don’t Miss It!
There’s a story in the Bible that talks about two women. One is named Martha and the other Mary. In the story these two women are shown doing different things, but there’s a message within the story.
Luke 10:38-42, starts off saying that Jesus came into a village and was then welcomed into the house of Mary and Martha. Luke 10:39-40 says, “Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing.” We have Martha who is preparing dinner and all the other things in between, then we have Mary who was with Jesus keeping him company. The beauty in this is Mary made an intentional decision to drop everything that she was doing and sit at the feet of Jesus; hearing him. Martha was upset because Mary wasn’t doing anything but sitting down. Luke 10:40 says, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” She had all these things to do and prepare but no one helped her…Martha was on her own. My favorite part is when Jesus steps in and tells Martha to RELAX! Luke 10:41 says, “But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details!”. How profound is that!! I mean how would you react if Jesus literally stopped you in your tracks and told you what he just told Martha?
A few years back I was the type of person that planned. I had this timeline of how my life was going to go and how it was going to look. I had it all planned, but God had other plans. I learned that I can plan all that I want, but the Lord determines my steps. I had to learn that it’s okay if things don’t go as planned; I just had to be present in the moment because I knew I would never get those moments back. I’ve been guilty of it, but sometimes we can be a Martha. We get so caught up in the mix of life that we forget to be present in the moments and opportunities that God gives us to live now.
Imagine if you were in Martha’s position, how would you feel knowing that you missed a chance to speak to Jesus up close and personal? I’m sure you’d feel like you missed out. All of this to say that maybe it’s time to shift our focus and focus on the finer things in life. Shift your focus to not being so caught up in the mess but being caught up in the moment. I once told my friends this phrase during a conversation about how crazy life can be even when we don’t expect it and as funny as it sounded, it was very profound…“Life is messy, but go with the scribbles.”
Don’t focus on the negative, there is always something positive to see…you just have to shift your focus from being a Martha to a Mary.
